Why we chose this
Halsman shot a hundred and one covers for LIFE and spent thirty-seven years making pictures with Salvador Dalí; the archive is run now by his grandson, opening it a file at a time. Each token is a portrait plus a long note on the sitting: Oppenheimer in 1958, Steinbeck arriving in a foul mood and announcing he could not stand cameras, Marcel Marceau, who had spent the war smuggling children out of occupied France. Twenty-one files across eleven holders, and the research is the reason to stop.
