The mark is not a monogram. It is a picture of a plant coming up through soil, drawn that way on oracle bones three thousand years ago and still legible now: a line for the ground, a shoot breaking it. Whatever else the character went on to mean, it began as a drawing of one specific event.

It is also the first character of 生き甲斐. 甲斐 is worth, or avail, what an effort turns out to be good for. Ikigai is life plus worth, and the house is named after a word that begins with life.

It is read more ways than any other.

生 is the usual answer to which character is read the most ways, and 下 is the only serious rival. Sei and shō. Nama, ki. And the verbs: i-kiru, to live. U-mareru, to be born. Ha-eru, to grow. O-u, to bear. Eight basic readings, twelve if the related verbs are counted apart, and more again if the rare ones are allowed in.

Nothing inside the character tells you which reading is meant. What stands next to it does.

That is an odd property for a logo and the correct one for a gallery. We do not make the work. We choose what is worth looking at and what hangs beside it, and that is the entire job. A character whose meaning is fixed by its neighbours is the right mark for a room whose only instrument is arrangement.

Raw and alive are the same word.

生 means raw. 生魚 is raw fish. 生ビール is draft beer, called that because it was never heated to kill what was living in it. The language does not keep one word for uncooked and another for still alive. It keeps this one, because to process a thing is to end it.

That is a position rather than a coincidence, and it is ours. This gallery sells nothing. There is no wallet connection, no listing, no bidding, no minting. If you want to collect something you find here, we hand you to OpenSea and get out of the way. We take no cut, which is the only reason to believe anything we wrote about the work.

Every layer we decline to add is a layer that cannot spoil.

生涯.

Add 涯, the far shore, and the character becomes a lifetime: life with its edge in view. That is the name of the studio's long work, the one the gallery keeps its calendar in. One mountain range for each year of Ethereum, drawn from that year's own prices, a new range rising every 30 July since 2015 and the last in 2045. The clock belongs to the chain and cannot be adjusted, which is the only kind worth painting on.

Time is the material.

The hours behind this gallery belong to one person, and they stopped being for sale in 1999. There was a forced sale of bitcoin at two hundred dollars, survived rather than chosen. Then a long quiet, and conviction that arrived at the bottom instead of the top. Every satoshi held since is an hour refused to somebody else's promise.

So 生 here does not mean vitality, or wellness, or a way of living well. It means time taken back and then held through winters, which is the only part that was ever difficult.

The object, and who made it.

This token is the character as a solid, built by Dimitri Daniloff, one of the nine of the Genesis Art Collective who backed this gallery before it had anything to show.

The right person to ask. His father was a sculptor and it shows: he came to photography caring about volume and form more than the decisive moment. Since 2018 he has been making portraits by photogrammetry, hundreds of photographs computed into a single model, pictures taken from positions no camera could occupy.

He has now done that to a letter. Three thousand years flat, on bone and paper and backlit glass, and it has a back. It turns on a single axis, so the far side comes round on its own rather than waiting to be found.

There is no texture on it. One material, no metal in it, one colour, and that colour is the yellow the rest of the building is painted in. The mesh carries its coordinates, so the surface is mapped and ready and nothing has been put on it.

Whatever is laid there later, this is the state before that, which is the one the character is named for.

Raw, which is to say untouched, which is to say still alive.

Inscribed on-chain as a Story Inscription on token #1 of IKIGAI LABS 生. We wrote it and we cannot edit it, which was the point of putting it there.
