Twenty ways
of not being
raw

The house mark exists as a solid with nothing on it. The next twenty put something on it, one surface at a time, and the first one stays bare so there is something to measure them against.

生 means raw. A series that covers it is a series about what processing costs, which is the only reason to make twenty of anything. This page is the note on how it gets made, written before the first material node exists so the constraints are on paper and the work has something to fail against.

The one that is already there

Token 1 is called Raw. Dimitri Daniloff built it: his father was a sculptor, and since 2018 he has made portraits by photogrammetry from positions no camera could occupy. He did that to a letter. Three thousand years flat on bone, paper and backlit glass, and now it has a back and turns on one axis.

It has no texture. That is not an oversight to be corrected, it is the piece. Its inscription says so permanently: whatever is laid there later, this is the state before that, which is the one the character is named for. Everything below is the later.

Twenty-one in total. One raw and twenty covered, which is a Bitcoin number in a studio that counts in them.

What the file actually contains

Read out of the GLB rather than off anybody’s description of it, including ours. The material in token 1 is named leather_fine_grain and the file holds no leather, no grain and no texture of any kind. An early draft of the inscription described that surface on the strength of the name, and it was three days from being permanent.

The line that matters is UVs present, textures zero. The mesh is mapped and has been left bare, so the twenty do not need the model reopened or re-unwrapped. The surface is already waiting for them, which is why this series is possible at all and why it has to be surfaces rather than shapes.

Five families, not a list of twenty

Naming all twenty now would be deciding the work in a spreadsheet before a single test render exists. Families instead, four apiece, and which four is a decision made at the bench.

Cast

Bronze, aluminium, lead. Metal that was poured, so the surface remembers a mould. The one family where metallic stops being zero, which changes how the spin reads more than any colour will.

Worked

Hammered, brushed, milled, scratched. A surface that shows the tool that made it. Closest to the mark being a physical object somebody actually finished by hand.

Grown

Leather, wood, bone, shell. The pictograph is a plant coming through soil, so a family made of things that were alive is the least arbitrary set here.

Applied

Paint, lacquer, enamel, powder coat. A coating over something else, which is the most honest description of what every piece in this series is doing.

Worn

Oxidised, chipped, sun-bleached, salted. Time as a surface. The only family where the texture is a record of something having happened rather than a decision.

Every one of them is a material the mark could be made of. Nothing that could only exist as a shader: no chrome that reflects a room the object is not standing in, no procedural noise that means nothing, no iridescence because it renders well. Daniloff’s whole practice is images that are openly constructed and still feel physical, and a series built on his model should not fail that test on the second piece.

The rules

The one variable is the surface. Every other thing that could differ between the twenty is fixed on purpose, because a series where several things change at once is a mood board.

Rule 01

The mesh is never edited

One geometry, twenty-one states. No displacement that moves the silhouette, no bevel, no subdivision, no sculpting. If a material needs the shape changed, the material is wrong.

Rule 02

Same camera, same light, same turn

Identical framing, identical key, identical rotation and duration. The only difference a viewer can find between two pieces should be what the mark is made of.

Rule 03

The material name must be true

Nothing called leather that has no leather in it. The name in the file is the name on the page and in the metadata, and it describes what is actually there. We have been caught by this once.

Rule 04

Raw stays first and stays bare

Token 1 is the control, and it is never revisited. If the series makes it look unfinished, the series is wrong, not the token.

Rule 05

Renders are proofs, the GLB is the work

A still is how a surface gets judged before it ships. What mints is the model, so anything that only exists in a render is not finished.

Rule 06

One contract

They mint into the existing collection as tokens 2 and up. Splitting one body of work across two addresses to get a tidier launch is not a reason.

What could go wrong

The failure mode is obvious and worth naming: twenty material presets on a logo is a swatch book. Chrome, marble, wood, glass, and a viewer has learned nothing they could not have guessed from the second one.

The guard is that every piece has to answer the character. 生 is raw, unprocessed, still living. Each surface is a way of ending that, and the ones worth making are the ones where you can feel what was given up. A lacquer that hides the geometry. An oxide that could only have arrived by waiting. A cast that remembers the mould more clearly than the letter.

If a texture makes the mark look better, it is decoration. If it makes the mark look like it has been through something, it is the work.

Where it stands

The contract is live on Ethereum and holds one token. Nothing else has been modelled, textured or rendered, and this page will be wrong in the ordinary way as soon as it has been: families will collapse, a rule will turn out to be a preference, and the count may not survive contact with twenty actual materials.

It is written down first anyway, because the alternative is deciding what the series was about after it is finished, and that is how a swatch book gets a manifesto stapled to it.
